Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Superintendent of Farm Operations, the Farm Manager manages field operations to implement, maintain and meet objectives for specialty crops research at the Ohio Agricultural Research Development Center (OARDC); collaborates with faculty, staff and students to establish and maintain specialty crops research projects; assists in implementing research in annual and perennial crops, and high tunnel greenhouses with appropriate season extension practices; supervises, hires, trains and evaluates staff and students; performs business and procurement functions for the unit per university guidelines; monitors budget resources and time/effort records; prioritizes and assigns field space for experiments; establishes appropriate crop rotation in non-research fields and implements practices to maintain soil quality; follows protocols to successfully accomplish research objectives; directs and participates in operations to establish experiments; monitors/scouts ongoing research projects for conditions that may impact research results, reports observations and takes appropriate actions; communicates with faculty/staff/students; coordinates labor resources, equipment sharing and daily work schedules with customers to meet demands; maintains detailed operations and field history records and prepares summaries for researchers; assists with research at off-site locations; responsible for coordinating agricultural equipment and facility maintenance, including drainage and irrigation systems; provides input to planning of field days, workshops and other outreach events; makes recommendations to department leadership; markets crops per department and university procedures; provides a safe working environment for team at all times; communicates pesticide re-entry information to faculty and staff; assists with training on specialty crops research practices; works flexible schedule as required by weather, soil, pest and crop conditions; performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or an equivalent combination of education and experience; experience with farm operations and supervisory experience; excellent communication and collaboration skills; minimum of three years of supervisory experience; proficient in Microsoft Office software programs, Excel, Word, email or equivalent; ability to obtain commercial pesticide applicators license within six months of employment; valid Ohio driver’s license; ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis, stoop, kneel and perform physical work.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to learn or adapt cultural practices in fruit and vegetable production; skilled in record keeping methods and report preparation; operation and repair of agricultural machinery; knowledge of experimental design in agricultural research

Target Salary $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 Annually
