Summary of Duties

The Program Specialist for Community Engagement and Health Transformation will hold an appointment with OSU Extension and be affiliated with the Center for Public Health Practice at the OSU College of Public Health (CPHP); in partnership with Extension and CPHP leadership , Extension staff and faculty, and CPHP staff in south-central Ohio, the successful candidate will be expected to increase the capacity of community coalitions to identify and implement evidence-based strategies and policies to improve health in a limited geographical region in southern Ohio; provide leadership for efforts which build community capacity for transformational change focused on improving health and wellness; identify community-capacity issues which may hinder the achievement of health and wellness goals and connect the community to programs and resources relevant to addressing capacity-related challenges; identify training and technical assistance needs within the Extension network and work with CPHP staff to identify and develop training opportunities to meet those needs; where possible, cross-county collaboration is encouraged; work to position OSU and its relevant academic and community engagement units to become a partner in the process of vetting potential strategies which have been shown to have significant and lasting impacts on the issues to be addressed; engage local government, schools, businesses, industry, community-based organizations, and existing coalitions in the achievement of community health outcomes through a focus on social, environmental and economic determinants of health, disease prevention, and health promotion; participate in nationally funded projects focusing on community coalition-building and health improvement, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in community health education ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; demonstrated skill and experience in coaching groups in the development of process skills; strong knowledge of public health, community development, systems change, and group processes are necessary; experience working at the community level and partnering with others to address community needs; knowledge, skills, and experience working with diverse audiences and being sensitive to their cultural and value-based beliefs.
