Summary of Duties

The First Year Residential Experience Specialist plays a significant role in training staff to serve the unique needs of incoming residential students and developing and maintaining initiatives that support their overall success. This position will be supervised by the Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives and will require some week night and weekend hours. They partner with outside offices to support the retention of students on the Columbus campus through university-wide committees such as the SpringForward workgroup and the Buckeye Book Community. Additionally, the First Year Residential Experience Specialist directs the Residence Hall Peer Tutoring program, including creating a future vision, day-to-day management of training, hiring, and staffing functions, managing the tutoring budget and assessing outcomes from the peer tutoring program. This role oversees creation of website content and delivers presentations to internal and external audiences through coordination with University Admissions. This also includes oversight of staff around prospective student visit days. Further, this staff member provides direct coaching, consultation, and feedback to professional hall staff supporting several Learning Communities, including the First Year Collegian Learning Community and co-advises the Learning Community Council.

As a part of the departmental leadership team, the First Year Residential Experience Specialist leads an internal committee of professional and graduate student staff, fulfills responsibilities of presenting during the summer orientation program, and provide impetus to further progress on larger Residence Life priorities and initiatives through staff selection and training and program design and implementation. Additionally, as an extension of Residence Life, this staff member will initiate and maintain positive relationship-building and collaboration with partners in academic units and outside of the university to support the overall goal of promoting student learning in the residence halls.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field; two years of professional experience in a Higher Education setting; experience presenting to student audiences; student supervision experience; experience with Microsoft Office.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with first-year students in a residential setting; experience working with tutoring or supplemental instruction programs; experience with Qualtrics, Star Rez, OnCourse (or other tutoring software) and centralized student information databases (i.e. SIS or other comparable databases); experience collaborating with academic affairs staff and/or faculty.

Target Salary $46,000.00 - $48,000.00 Annually
