Summary of Duties

The Office of Distance Education and eLearning serves a central role in supporting the colleges and departments who offer online instruction. Just as instruction needs adapted for online platforms, so does marketing. The Ohio State Online marketing team promotes visibility for the Ohio State Online portfolio of learning opportunities. These staff also partner with staff in the academic units to support the college-level marketing of online offerings.

Ohio State Online is a central component of ODEE’s work. Our work across the university promotes high quality learning experiences for degree programs that take place 100% online. The Marketing & Communications Senior Strategist will work as a member of ODEE’s Marketing & Communications team, with Ohio State Online as his or her primary focus.

The Marketing & Communications Sr. Strategist builds strong working relationships with colleges and departments across the university to fulfill ODEE’s commitments according to the Distance Education MOU. These commitments include promotional video production, web presence development and enhancement on the Ohio State Online catalog, lead generation from onilne.osu.edu and marketing consultation. Consultation topics are broad, including but not limited to media buying strategy, market research analysis, web presence optimization, key messaging development and lead networking.

The Sr. Strategist must use critical thinking skills to identify the most rewarding marketing opportunities for each of his or her clients across the colleges. (S)he maintains and improves the online marketing toolkit as a reference for staff in the colleges to use in developing their own marketing strategies to recruit online learners. The toolkit must enable college staff to develop promotional materials that align with the editorial style, visual branding guidelines and value propositions as identified for Ohio State Online. (S)he provides guidance and professional development opportunities for marketing and recruitment staff in the colleges in the form of webinars and consultations in addition to the toolkit.

This person will also create advertising materials in traditional and multimedia formats to promote Ohio State Online as assigned. This position requires a keen ability to work on several campaigns simultaneously, exercising excellent problem solving and task management.

As the distance education marketing team grows, the Sr. Strategist will train new strategists who join the team to support college clients and deliver our committed activities according to the MOU. (S)he will provide coaching and peer mentorship to marketing strategists until they are acclimated in their role. The Sr. Strategist must maintain documentation to orient the marketing strategists and help them navigate the processes involved in providing marketing support to the colleges.

The position is part of a high performing, fast-paced team focused on inspiring storytelling related to all academic technology services, but especially distance education. Skills needed for this position include: outstanding communications skills and customer service, impeccable writing and editing for web, project management and time management, balancing several client projects simultaneously, video story-boarding and presentation development skills. A good eye for visual design and website user experience is also necessary.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 3-5 years of full-time experience in the following areas: digital marketing strategy, developing marketing strategy informed by data, providing superior customer service to clients as a marketing expert, content management systems including Drupal; website optimization (user experience, lead generation, search engine optimization), strategic content development in written and multimedia formats, excellent verbal and written communications skills, digital advertising platforms including Google AdWords (SEM, Display, and YouTube) and paid social media channels; partnering with market research firms to strengthen advertising efforts.

Desired Qualifications

Proficiency in project management systems such as Jira; experience working in a marketing agency; higher education recruitment experience; proficiency with marketing automation tools such as HubSpot.
