Summary of Duties

The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine is seeking a Research Associate to execute and manage research on human/animal microbiome with an emphasis on the gut microbiome and infectious disease. The Research Associate will primarily coordinate the development and implementation of research methodologies and techniques, design and perform laboratory experiments, maintain laboratory records, trouble-shoot protocols, and collect, analyze, and evaluate research data. This position will be responsible for the set-up, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment; routine laboratory maintenance; ordering lab equipment and supplies; directing and authorizing purchases; negotiating pricing with external vendors; and ensuring compliance/certification with safety standards by laboratory personnel. This position will also train and supervise students or other research personnel in ongoing research projects. Additionally, this position will be expected to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, articles, abstracts, grant proposals, and presentations, as well as consult with scientific literature. Common laboratory duties may include DNA extraction from varying biological samples, aerobic and anaerobic culture of microbes, library preparation and submission of samples for next-generation sequencing, communicating regular status updates on progress or issues in the laboratory, and working with gnotobiotic mouse/pig models. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. This position requires the successful completion of a University background check.

Required Qualifications

M.S. in biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Extensive laboratory experience in cell biology, molecular biology, or immunology; computer software knowledge; ability to lift 50-100 lbs.
