Summary of Duties

Public Safety Officer-Regional Campus – Servers as public safety officer at the Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College to perform public safety and security, parking and other emergency response functions; assists in coordinating programs and services that increase student, faculty, staff, and community safety awareness; performs routine patrols of buildings and grounds; serves as a first responder for violent and non-violent situations; conducts and assists with investigations; maintains relationship with campus administrators; works with local, county, and state law enforcement agencies and emergency management agencies to address problems; completes statistical reports, and enhances presence on campus; assists in supervising student assistant employees in coordinating public safety, security, and parking programs in accordance with established policies for Ohio State Newark and COTC; helps maintain the campus emergency management plan, including loss prevention, fire safety, and emergency preparedness; assesses and intervenes when appropriate in situations involving individuals who pose a potential risk of harm to persons or property on the Newark campus or disruption of normal business operation and special events; responds to 9-1-1 calls when there is an imminent threat; provides a security presence when requested during potentially problematic meetings or in other appropriate circumstances; conducts initial investigations when appropriate; may make arrests; assists managing and directing vehicular, pedestrian, and bike traffic tickets and arranges for towing when necessary; enforces traffic laws and regulations; participates in responses to, or reports, unusual or hazardous conditions that might endanger life, property, or public safety; makes recommendations for purchase of equipment; responsible for maintenance and care of equipment and vehicle; assists with Campus Safety Act statistics; reports to the Public Safety Supervisor-Regional Campus; assists in reviewing, evaluating, and providing recommendations on campus safety and security to Ohio State Newark and COTC administration, support staff, and academic units; may serve on Ohio State Newark and/or COTC committees composed of Ohio State Newark and/or COTC faculty, staff, and students to assist with the campus safety and security plan; helps to promote student, faculty, and staff safety awareness programs; assists in supervising student safety staff in the provision of a safe, secure and welcoming environment, provides training for student safety staff in appropriate behavior and responsibilities in their role as security personnel on campus as well as training in appropriate university and college policies; prepares and submits reports of incidents; maintains communications with Ohio State Newark and COTC administrators, support staff, academic units, state and local public safety officials, and officials on the Columbus campus in matters of public safety; as appropriate, attends meetings and training events on the Columbus campus or with local law enforcement and public safety organizations; receives instruction on purpose and responsibilities of a campus law enforcement office, standards of ethics, uniform regulations and care, public and human relations, laws of evidence, methods of arrest, search and seizure investigation, handling of suspects and court conduct, patrolling and enforcement techniques and the use and maintenance of fire arms; assists in campus awareness and compliance with federally mandated crime awareness information and other mandate of information such as crime rate, crime statistics, sexual assault, and substance abuse prevention; maintains Daily Log of crime reports; assists in developing campus safety notice.

Required Qualifications

Minimum age 21; valid unrestricted Ohio operator’s license upon appointment; minimum seventy-two (72) quarter college credit hours or equivalent semester credit hours of documented college course work, or twelve (12) months public law enforcement experience, or equivalent combination education and experience, or current Ohio Peace Officer certification; eligibility for faithful performance bond; must successfully complete medical/visual, psychological, physical performance evaluations, polygraph, and other pre-employment requirements prescribed by the University and police department prior to appointment, and possibly thereafter; no conviction record for felony or crime of moral turpitude.

Desired Qualifications

Scheduling flexibility; typical shifts will be Monday-Friday, 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., with the potential for variable coverage and flexing with the public safety supervisor-regional campus; knowledge of criminal and civil law, rules and regulations dealing with higher education; ability to qualify annually to use a firearm; ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of student, staff, faculty and administrators; ability to demonstrate agility and physical fitness; ability to understand manual and verbal instruction, including in a technical nature; OPOTA academy certificate; experience working in a college or university setting and working with campus regulations and ethics standards; knowledge of first-aid techniques; ability to interpret extensive variety of techniques, materials in books, journals & manuals; experience preparing meaningful and concise reports; experience handling sensitive inquiries and contacts with other governmental law enforcement personnel; experience with Windows-based computer systems.
